(Usually it's like 100 games or something.) I'm not saying that's what OW should do, just that you can provide differentiated rewards to make sure you're motivating your entire player base.Īs long as players are doing their best - I don't really care what their motivation is for playing comp. They also give rewards for playing X number of games, but it's such a high number that it deters most people who would just play comp to get the reward. Paladins gives everyone a special border at the end of each competitive season, but the higher your rank is the cooler and more elaborate the border gets. And those aren't players who don't care about winning-they're players who enjoy the game enough that they keep playing, win or lose! And those players should be rewarded, because they're the ones who quietly provide the lifeblood of comp in the metal ranks. That's just the nature of the MMR system.Īfter 4 years of comp, there are myriad players with gold (or higher) borders but are still ranked in gold or plat. Yeah, that problem doesn't go away entirely, but I think it's significantly mitigated if you make it hero agnostic.Īnd really, I think you want to reward the people who are dedicated to comp even if they don't climb-because in reality, the vast majority of players don't climb. Just adding some simple things like that, where ladder players actually have a challenge to strive for and some sort of reward if they get it, would help a lot to encourage people to play the game more. Or recently, super and Space and a few other guys spent untold hours in the practice range just trying to hit the rock jump that required pretty much frame-perfect input. I still remember xQc and his friends playing that Overwatch Archives event for hours and hours every night to get the top score. ![]() Gamers love challenges and winning bragging rights. Having monthly goals and rewards for hitting a certain SR, or winning a certain number of games in gold/diamond/gm etc, or even at the top level having certain sprays or emotes that are given to the first 10 people who hit rank 1 within a three month period or something like that. ![]() How even just a little thing like Top 500- which is literally just a number on your portrait- really helps to keep the game interesting. This is something that pros have mentioned before about grinding competitive.
